When I grew Up by CarmelCoveredQ-Chan When I grew Up by CarmelCoveredQ-Chan
I've noticed for a long long time even before I came to dA that people seem so dead set on drawing like other people.
Be it Walt Disney,Clamp, Masamune Shirow, Klar,Bleedman, Jisuk etc etc and anyone else you can name i'm sure someone has named it.
(Hey I wish these things too sometimes but...)
As flattering as it may be to some do you really think thats the best? I don't really think any of the greats (on dA or not) woke up and said "gee when i grow up i wanna draw like so and so"
Everyones art style is unique or at the very least should aspire to be and it would be really sad if every one looked the same. Saying that isnt it just that what makes us like them? They arent like the rest that we've seen, yeah some people have a similarity but being blaightently identical in every artistic way is in rather bad taste IMHO.

yeah we can learn form eachother via methods of inking, colouring and such like but at least adapt it to how we draw.

so thats why I wanna draw like me and no one else.

I'm really sorry for the rambling ._. and if i confused anyone but its just something i feel strongly about. I don't like copy cats and i think you know the kind i speak of. anyways enjoy if you please.

mmmh... in a way this applies to me.
I mean, i copy and i love to get inspired by artists that are better than me to try to improve my art, and every day, and more than twice a day, when I see a great drawing I say, for example 'what a cool lineart, what a cool drawing style, what cool colours, I want to be able to do the same! '

But when I draw my personal things (characters etch) , I prefer to come with my own solution, because I want to draw something that is close to what I imagine.

So is better to copy, practice and get inspired by other but we also have to understand ourselves and to draw following our personal tastes.

But what about perceptional artistry, where "style" doesn't exist? Does drawing what's right in front of you count as art in this manner?
gojiramusume Featured By Owner Jan 14, 2012  Hobbyist Traditional Artist
It happens to me all the time while surfing dA. I discover so many talented people and I think "oh God why can't I draw like them" But in the end I'm always proud of the things I created in my OWN style.
The only thing I do is randomly pick up certain elements from other people's work, like how they draw eyes or face shapes or how they color and add it to my own style. But it's really just developing over time, it's not like it happens over night. It took me almost ten years to get where I am today, when it comes to drawing.

The artist will never be unique without their own style :D
I wanted to draw like someone else in the past - but I've grown up from it long time ago.

to be honest, i have always said that i want to draw like ... (many ppl xD) but for some reason just seeing ur stamp changed my mind :) thnx!

I think that it's good to draw in several different artist's styles to start with, to sort of just learn about stylizing and different techniques and stuff, so long as you do make an effort to develop your own at some point. I'm trying to make my own style right now and I'm sort of wishing I'd done that rather than focusing on anime for so long.... Damn anime... it fucks with everything D:
oOLittleLemonOo Featured By Owner Nov 17, 2012  Student Digital Artist
Those who draw anime have their styles, it's not their fault that YOU copied it.

when i say that i mean that i want to draw with someones level of skill and not their style in particular, but yeah i get what you're saying

Exactly. It's kinda hard to develop a style for me tho. Wonder how they do it...v.v

Haha same here!
I admire the styles of a lot of people, but there's no style I'd rather have than my own. :)

NotNights Featured By Owner Mar 27, 2010  Hobbyist General Artist
Well, other then Disney, because if you want to work for Disney one day, you have to know how to draw the style. That is why Tim Burton isn't aloud to make animation movies for Disney.

I agree with this (Even if my gallery doesn't look like it) I wish I had a origianl style of some sort.

I've discussed this many times with people, the most recent was this very morning.

Some people are very sensitive about it though, which at times can be entertaining, but other times it just annoys me with their ignorance...

It's hard not to be influenced when you like something very much but I totally agree with you. :)

WELL SAID!!!!! I MUST use this in my journal!!
Miiroku Featured By Owner May 15, 2009
I agree with you. There's no problem with wanting to get better, or being inspired by an artist, but pissing and moaning because there's an artist who's better than you, so there-for you try to draw just like them, I hate. I can honestly say, I love my art, and there's no one else that I'd rather draw like.

I think an artist should want their art to stand out, not be unrecognizable between another artist's. Having your own style should be one of the most important things to an artist.

I agree with you 100%!

This stamp is definitely going in my journal.

Don't worry, these people are usually people who can't draw and need something to reach for. When they get up to a standard when they can draw, they become less interested in copying other people's styles. Mostly.

I exacly know what U'r saying, tracing is horrible, and people should discover their own style.
but I didn't get there yet D: I'm afraid someone will accuse me someday that I have stolen all my works, and everything from different artsit. lol, I didn't ofcourse. still searching for my own. know I'll get there someday.

Personally, I think you are half right and half wrong.

Alot of big name people and manga illistrators were inspired by the ones that came before. Be it, anime itself was just a copy of the animation from Walt Disney. So saying orginaity is the bases of anime and manga in general is a bit off.

Also, I read alot in the manuscripts of many manga of the artist taking about their inspiration and their heros. The author for the Naruto, Masashi Kishimoto, has even said himself that he started drawing the charicters off Ultimate Muscle. So, everyone needs someone to inspire them. I see nothing wrong with that.

That being said, individuality in art style is a huge plus. As like you said, no one got where they are now by following the formula exactly. There's always room for originality, and often it's rewarded.

So basicly what I'm saying is that you cant be mad at people that get inspired by other artist. :P

Sorry for the rant. ^__^;;
CarmelCoveredQ-Chan Featured By Owner Feb 13, 2008
Oh no it's totally cool and I understand and totally agree with what your saying. I know that many greats (not just in anime and manga) were inspired by previous artists and styles, even drawing characters from other series/ in other styles/ect. However, that didn't stop them from creating their own style, If Masashi Kishimoto had only drawn in the style from Ultimate Muscle rather then his current style I think it would be very noticable. However even then I'm willing to back down from that since Hiro Mashima's current manga (Fairy Tale) shares an awful lot of visual similarities to Eiichiro Oda's, One Piece.

Either way I'm not out trying to say I'm right, I just wanted to state my opinion on how it seems like a fair amount of artists nower days seem to just stick to one style rather then progress, in many cases they do but I'm sure even you yourself have seen examples of emulation thats gone stagnant or seem to jump ship when ever a new style hits the cool scene. And I'm not mad at people being inspired by other artists at all! Oh no, I was as well and I still continue to be. Experimentation with other styles I think is a part of artistic growth. Still I do strongly feel that if you are emulating a certain artist or style it is kind of hindering.

oh man that came out a whole lot longer then I had wanted. either way, I respect your opinion, I'm not mad, its all cool and I apologize for my rant

There's something to be said about style and it's that unique style that will attract people to someones art because it isn't the same thing being redone or rehashed over and over.

I support this stamp

I really love this. For a while I thought I wanted to draw like other artists, but as I kept with my art I found my own style and I like it better than anything else. It expresses my view of the world instead of how someone else interprets anatomy, designs, proportions, etc. That's not to discount striving to better you own work or having others inspire you. Each person has their own stregnths and weaknesses and thats what makes each style so wonderful. No matter what "level" of art you think you have or others think you have, art is to be enjoyed. No piece of art is more valid than another. Enjoy what you do and be proud of it.

Also, may I put this in my journal? (I know its a stamp but I feel it's best to ask)
